Water, Sanitation, & Hygiene

Improving Health and Education in Sanje, Uganda

WASH programs were developed to help communities work on long-term prevention and solutions to greatly improve health in all corners of the world, especially in schools. Our goal is to improve our current facilities for the students, teachers, and community at Sabina.

Because drinkable water, toilets, and good hygiene in schools can help keep children alive, healthy, and learning.

In December 2021 we came together with a goal to raise $80,000 to fuel our W.A.S.H program and we did it! Now we are working hard to add new hygiene maintenance structures, renovate outdated sanitation facilities, and repair existing components.

All for the children.

Clean drinking water, good sanitation facilities, and proper hygiene in schools constitute some of the greatest opportunities for students to remain healthy and thrive in the classroom.

 Where these funds are going

WATER

The water at Sabina must be boiled before it is safe enough to drink. The piping is also very old and has begun to corrode and rust contaminating the water further. Our goal is to replace the old piping and install a filtration system so that the students can have access to fresh, clean, drinkable water from a tap. All of the water systems at Sabina have not been updated in over 30 years and need major repairs to run efficiently, support the students, and expand the school’s permaculture program.

SANITATION

Currently, the students must go to one of the outside taps, fill up a bucket with water, and bathe themselves in a stall. We would like to install simple showerheads to improve sanitation and student privacy. We will also install a plumbing system for the student latrines to allow for the safe and efficient disposal of waste.

HYGIENE

Good sanitation goes hand-in-hand with proper hygiene. We plan to do this by installing permanent handwashing facilities throughout the campus and updating the dormitories at Sabina. These dorms offer a place for 150 boys and girls to rest and sleep. That’s a lot of mattresses accumulating dust mites, bed bugs, and the possibility of urine from young bed-wetters. Beginning in 2022, it is Sabina’s goal to supply all students with mattresses, bed covers, and mosquito nets to eliminate exposure to unwanted pests and human waste.
